This richly evocative novel-in-letters tells the story of two Persian noblemen who have left their country—the modern Iran—to journey to Europe in search in wisdom.
As they travel, they write home to wives and eunuchs in the harem and to friends in France and elsewhere. Their colorful observations on the culture differences between West and East conjure up Eastern sensuality, repression, and cruelty in contrast to the freer, more civilized West—but here also unworthy nobles and bishops, frivolous women in fashion, and conceited people of all kinds are satirized.

After the required reading, I ended up finishing the entire novel to fill in the blanks as to what had occurred. The Author's biting wit is much appreciated, and the novel is an interesting read to say the least. The ending will certainly leave the reader scratching their head, but overall good book!

I definitely recommend giving this book a try before you attempt any of Montesquieu's other works! One person found this helpful. A classic on the relativity of words. This book is a fictional exchange of correspondence between two Persian travelers in Europe; but it provides Montesquieu ample opportunity to express his thoughts about a variety of topics.
They are left to argue for a long time, and the war goes on until a decision arrives to end it. So that I can assure you that no kingdom has ever had as many civil wars as the kingdom of Christ. But although he can see everything, he does not always use his power. In them God never appears to know the future decisions of minds, and this seems to have been the first truth that Moses revealed to mankind. Power can never be divided equally between prince and people; it is too difficult to keep the balance. The power must necessarily decrease on one side and increase on the other, but usually the ruler is at an advantage, being in control of the armed forces.
Before the power of Spain was reduced, the Catholics were much stronger than the Protestants. The latter have gradually got onto an equal footing.
With them, commerce brings everything to life, while with others monasticism carries death with it everywhere. These metals are absolutely useless in themselves, and are identical with wealth only because they have been chosen to be the sign of it.
This enlightenment work is hard to peg. In some ways, it is a novel; in some ways a philosophical treatise; in some ways, a 'travelogue'. It works well as all three, to tell the truth. Montesquieu - who later wrote 'Spirit of the Laws" - published this collection of fictional letters between two Persian brothers roaming Europe, anonymously.
And, yes, the book did cause a decent amount of controversey as M was denounced as an unbeliever. Best of all, it's free.
