Fostering global leaders for the next generation is an important mission of universities. The main goal of this program is to foster PhDs with deep specialization and peer leadership who will be able to compete well internationally. Research ethics committees in Japan: A perspective from thirty years of experience at Tokushima University. The first Japanese ethics committee for biomedical research involving human subjects was established at Tokushima University in Although this committee was not formed as a response to national directives, the government eventually developed ethical guidelines, such as the Ethical Guidelines for Clinical Studies that were established in The practical impact of such guidelines was a rapid increase in the number of protocols seeking ethics committee approval and, accordingly, an increase in the workload of ethics committees.
This review describes the activity of the ethics committee at Tokushima University during the last thirty years and discusses the infrastructure that best supports the activities of this committee. In addition, we address the issues that ethics committees now face and discuss future directions. Academic Libraries in Japan. Academic libraries in Japan are well resourced by international standards, and support Japan 's internationally recognized research capability well, but there are also ways in which they reflect Japan 's strong bureaucratic culture. Recent changes to the status of national university libraries have seen a new interest in customer service, and….
Addressing practical issues related to nursing care for international visitors to Hiroshima. When nine million foreigners visited Japan in , the federal government set a goal to attract an additional two and a half million visitors including medical tourists by This research investigates the attitudes and concerns of Japanese nurses when they are in a situation dealing with foreign patients.
The data were collected from March through September , from nurses at three hospitals, in close proximity to popular tourist destinations in Hiroshima. A questionnaire was developed for this research, named Mari Meter, which included a section to write answers to an open question for the nurses to express their opinions. These responses were examined statistically and by word analysis using Text Mining Studio. Japanese nurses expressed greatest concern about payment options, foreign language skills, and issues of informed consent, when dealing with foreigners.
The results confirm that, in order to provide a high quality of patient care, extra preparation and a greater knowledge of international workers and visitors are required by nursing professionals in Japan. As industry- university collaborations are promoted to commercialize university research and foster economic growth, it is important to understand how companies benefit from these collaborations, and to ensure that resulting academic discoveries are developed for the benefit of all stakeholders: Lock up of inventions, and censoring of academic publications, should be avoided if feasible.
This case-study analysis of interviews with 90 companies in Canada, Japan , the UK and USA assesses the scope of this challenge and suggests possible resolutions. The participating companies were asked to describe an important interaction with universities , and most described collaborative research. The most frequently cited tensions concerned intellectual property management and publication freedom. IP disagreements were most frequent in the context of narrowly-focused collaborations with American universities. However, in the case of exploratory research, companies accepted the IP management practices of US universities.
It might make sense to let companies have an automatic exclusive license to IP from narrowly defined collaborations, but to encourage universities to manage inventions from exploratory collaborations to ensure development incentives. Although Canada, the UK and US have strong publication freedom guarantees, tensions over this issue arose frequently in focused collaborations, though were rare in exploratory collaborations.
The UK Lambert Agreements give sponsors the option to control publications in return for paying the full economic cost of a project. This may offer a model for the other three countries. Uniquely among the four countries, Japan enables companies to control exclusively most collaborative inventions and to censor academic publications. Despite this high degree of control, the interviews suggest many companies do not develop university discoveries to their full potential.
The steps suggested above may rebalance the. Organizational climate with gender equity and burnout among university academics in Japan. We investigated relationships between the perception of organizational climate with gender equity and psychological health among 94 women and men in a Japanese private university in using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory i. Perceptions of organizational climate with respect to gender equity were measured with two scales including organizational engagement with a gender equal society in the workplace consisting of three domains of 'Women utilization', 'Organizational promotion of gender equal society' and 'Consultation service' ; and a gender inequality in academia scale that had been previously developed.
Multivariable linear models demonstrated significant statistical interactions between gender and perceptions of organizational climate; 'Women utilization' or lack of 'Inequality in academia' alleviated burnout only in women. As such, it is suggested organizational fairness for gender equity may be a useful tool to help mitigate psychological burnout among women in academia. An extraordinary precipitation over mmhr-1in Hiroshima on August 19, , caused a flash flood which resulted in 74 fatalities and collapse of houses. In order to examine the meteorological background of this flooding event, we carried out a detailed analysis utilizing rain gauge data, satellite precipitation dataset, and a meso scale and a global scale objective analyses provided from the Japan Meteorological Agency.
As a result, a combined effect of an atmospheric river AR and a cut-off low COL in this flooding event was elucidated. During the event, a filamentary transport of moisture extending from the Indochina Peninsula to the Japanese Islands was observed along the southern side of the subtropical jet, forming an AR. This AR had a deep structure with an amount of free tropospheric moisture comparable to that of the boundary layer. With various sensitivity experiments, we concluded that a mid-tropospheric instability associated with the cold core of the COL and a dynamical ascent induced in its foreside, collaboratively worked with the anomalous moisture in the free troposphere associated with the AR, to extraordinarily enhance the precipitation over Hiroshima region.
An orographic effect to concentrate the precipitation in this region was also confirmed. An implication on a difference in effects of AR in this event with a climatologically moist boundary layer, from those in the US west coast with a very dry environment, was also obtained. Absenteeism among survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Atomic bomb survivors who worked at the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima during the years and held handbooks identifying them as survivors took significantly more days of both annual leave and sick leave than did matched and paired control subjects.
These differences in leave-taking patterns are considered to be due to behavioural causes as they could not be attributed to radiation dose-response effects. Specialty education in periodontics in Japan and the United States: Japan has institutions that train qualified postdoctoral students in the field of periodontics; however, Japan does not have comprehensive advanced periodontal programs and national standards for these specialty programs. To help Japanese programs move toward global standards in this area, this study was designed to describe overall differences in periodontics specialty education in Japan and the United States and to compare periodontics faculty members and residents' characteristics and attitudes in two specific programs, one in each country.
Demographic data were collected as well as respondents' attitudes toward and assessment of their programs. The results showed many differences in curriculum structure and clinical performance. To provide high-quality and consistent education for periodontal residents, Japan needs to establish a set of standards that will have positive consequences for those in Japan who need periodontal treatment.
This paper presents a brief introduction of the science education in Japan with an overview of the educational contents and standards laid by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology MEXT. International migration between Japan and Brazil dates back to , when the first group of Japanese migrated to Brazil. However, in the s, a reverse flow occurred, as thousands of Brazilians of Japanese descent traveled to Japan to work in manufacturing and construction factories "dekasegi" workers. Benchmark test of neutron transport calculations: A benchmark test of the Monte Carlo neutron and photon transport code system MCNP was performed using a bare- and energy-moderated Cf fission neutron source which was obtained by transmission through cm-thick iron. An iron plate was used to simulate the effect of the Hiroshima atomic bomb casing. This test includes the activation of indium and nickel for fast neutrons and gold, europium, and cobalt for thermal and epithermal neutrons, which were inserted in the moderators.
The latter two activations are also to validate Eu and 60Co activity data obtained from the atomic bomb-exposed specimens collected at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The neutron moderators used were Lucite and Nylon 6 and the total thickness of each moderator was 60 cm or 65 cm. From this study, the MCNP code was found to be accurate enough for the bare- and energy-moderated Cf neutron activation calculations of these elements using moderators containing hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen.
The Japanese government at present is implementing international health and medical growth strategies mainly from the viewpoint of business. However, the United Nations is set to resolve the Post Development Agenda in the fall of ; the agenda will likely include the achievement of universal health coverage UHC as a specific development goal. Japan 's healthcare system, the foundation of which is its public, nationwide universal health insurance program, has been evaluated highly by the Lancet. The World Bank also praised it as a global model. This paper presents suggestions and problems for Japan regarding global health strategies, including in regard to several prerequisite domestic preparations that must be made.
They are summarized as follows. Rethinking the Concept of Sustainability: Hiroshima as a Subject of Peace Education. The article discusses a sustainable educational approach for developing a moral value of peace by using a historical event, the bombing of Hiroshima. To make the case, the article uses the care theory of Nel Noddings to discuss the interpersonal aspects of peace education. The article asks how care theory handles tragedies like Hiroshima and it…. August Hiroshima landslide disaster and its societal impact. In the early morning of August 20, , Hiroshima city was hit by a number of debris flows along a linear rain band which caused extreme downpour.
This disaster claimed 74 death, although this city experienced very similar disaster in , claiming more than 30 residents lives. In the most severely affected debris flow torrent, more than 50 residents were killed. Most of the casualties arose in the wooden, vulnerable houses constructed in front of the exit of torrents. Points and lessons learnt from the disaster are as follows: Area of causative extreme rainfall is localized in 2 km x 10 km along the rain band.
Authors collected two types of sands from the source scar of the initial debris slides which induced debris flows. Tested by the ring shear apparatus under pore-pressure control condition, clear "Sliding surface liquefaction" was confirmed for both samples even under small normal stress, representing the small thickness of the slides. These results shows even instant excess pore pressure could initiate the slides and trigger slide-induced debris flow by undrained loading onto the torrent deposits.
Apparently long-term land-use change affected the vulnerability of the community. Those communities were developed on the past debris flow fan. As the devastated area is very close to downtown of Hiroshima city, it gave gigantic societal impact to the Japanese citizens. After Hiroshima debris flow disaster, the Landslide disaster reduction law which intends to promote designation of landslide potential risk zones, was adopted in Immediately after disaster, national diet approved revision of the bill.
Explosion of the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki corresponds to the only historical moment when atomic bombs were used against civilians. This event triggered countless investigations into the effects and dosimetry of ionizing radiation. However, none of the investigations has used the victims' bones as dosimeter. In , one of the authors of the present study SM traveled to Japan and conducted a preliminary experiment on the victims' bone samples. The idea was to use the paramagnetism induced in bone after irradiation to measure the radiation dose.
Technological advances involved in the construction of spectrometers, better knowledge of the paramagnetic center, and improvement in signal processing techniques have allowed us to resume the investigation. We obtained a reconstructed dose of 9. Number of papers published in English from the nursing departments of 42 national universities in Japan in the past ten years. In Japan , the departments of nursing were established by , and graduate school programs for master's degree were established by , in 42 national universities.
With these changes, a more academic mission has been pursued, and the need for writing papers in English has increased. To investigate the numbers of papers published in English from the nursing departments of national universities in Japan over the past ten years. The average number of total papers, in which at least one of the authors was a nursing teacher, and first-authored papers, in which the first author was a nursing teacher, were The means and standard deviations of the number of total papers and first-authored papers were When journals with the highest number of papers were analyzed, 12 of the top 20 total papers and 12 of the top 16 first-authored papers were in journals whose editorial offices are in Japan.
The number of papers published in English has increased over the past ten years, varied markedly depending on the universities and teachers, and many papers were published in Japanese journals. To our knowledge, this is the first report anywhere to determine the average number of nursing papers "per teacher" in a specific population.

How do bioethics teachers in Japan cope with ethical disagreement among healthcare university students in the classroom? A survey on educators in charge. Objective The purpose of this study was to demonstrate how educators involved in the teaching of bioethics to healthcare university students in Japan would cope with ethical disagreement in the classroom, and to identify factors influencing them.
Methods A cross sectional survey was conducted using self administered questionnaires mailed to a sample of university faculty in charge of bioethics curriculum for university healthcare students. Results A total of usable questionnaires were returned: When facing ethical disagreement in the classroom, coping behaviour differed depending on the topic of discussion, was influenced by educators' individual clear ethical attitudes regarding the topic of discussion, and was independent of many respondents' individual and social backgrounds.
Among educators, it was commonly recognised that the purpose of bioethics education was to raise the level of awareness of ethical problems, to provide information about and knowledge of those issues, to raise students' sensitivity to ethical problems, and to teach students methods of reasoning and logical argument. Yet, despite this, several respondents considered the purpose of bioethics education to be to influence students about normative ethical judgments. There was no clear relationship, however, between ways of coping with ethical disagreement and educators' sense of the purpose of bioethics education.
Conclusions This descriptive study suggests that educators involved in bioethics education for healthcare university students in Japan coped in various ways with ethical disagreement. Further research concerning ethical disagreement in educational settings is needed to provide better bioethics education for healthcare students.
While Japan 's success in achieving universal health insurance over a short period with controlled healthcare costs has been studied from various perspectives, that of beneficiaries have been overlooked. We conducted a secondary analysis of an opinion poll on health insurance in , immediately after reaching universal coverage. We found that people continued to face a slight barrier to healthcare access In our study, younger age, having children before school age, lower living standards, and the health insurance scheme were factors that were associated with a willingness to pay premiums.
Involving high-income groups in public insurance is considered to be the key to ensuring universal coverage of social insurance. The Great East Japan Earthquake of seriously jeopardized our collaborative research with Professor Masashi Aoki Tohoku University School of Medicine on the development of new therapies for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ALS using hepatocyte growth factor. After the earthquake struck, Professor Aoki made a tremendous contribution to saving patients' lives and to recovering from the disastrous situation.
Thanks to his strong leadership and support from many reliable colleagues, we could finally start new clinical trials for ALS patients. In this article, I wish to introduce Professor Aoki's heroic efforts. A lifelong journey of moving beyond wartime trauma for survivors from Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor.
This study examines 51 stories of health, shared by people who survived the wartime trauma of Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor, seeking to identify turning points that moved participants along over their lifetime. The central turning point for Hiroshima survivors was "becoming Hibabusha A-bomb survivor " and for Pearl Harbor survivors was "honoring the memory and setting it aside.
- Turkeys Water Policy: National Frameworks and International Cooperation;

- Fortune Cookie Magic - One;
Regardless of experience or nationality, participants moved through wartime trauma by connecting with others, pursuing personal and global peace. Neutron-induced 63Ni activity and microscopic observation of copper samples exposed to the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Fast neutron activation data for 63Ni in copper samples exposed to the Hiroshima atomic bomb are important in evaluating neutron doses to the survivors. Up to until now, accelerator mass spectrometry and liquid scintillation counting methods have been applied in 63Ni measurements and data were accumulated within m from the hypocenter.
The slope of the activation curve versus distance shows reasonable agreement with the calculation result, however, data near the hypocenter are scarce. In the present work, two copper samples obtained from the Atomic bomb dome m from the hypocenter and the Bank of Japan building m were utilized in 63Ni beta-ray measurement with a Si surface barrier detector. Additionally, microscopic observation of the metal surfaces was performed for the first time.
Only upper limit of 63Ni production was obtained for copper sample of the Atomic bomb dome. The result of the 63Ni measurement for Bank of Japan building show reasonable agreement with the AMS measurement and to fast neutron activation calculations based on the Dosimetry System DS02 neutrons.
Radiation exposure and circulatory disease risk: Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb survivor data, To investigate the degree to which ionising radiation confers risk of mortality from heart disease and stroke. Prospective cohort study with more than 50 years of follow-up. Atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Following the incorporation of Japanese national universities in April , the ownership of university inventions is now similar to that in the USA. However, in contrast to the USA, joint research projects involving close collaboration with company researchers who are frequently named as co-inventors are common.

Monitoring temporal and spatial trends of legacy and emerging contaminants in marine environment: Over the years, es-BANK has archived specimens representing a wide range of environmental matrices, i. The samples have been collected as part of the various monitoring programs conducted worldwide. The current review is a summary of selected studies conducted at the Center for Marine Environmental Studies, on temporal and spatial trends of legacy and emerging contaminants in the marine environment.
One of the major conclusions drawn from the studies is that environmental problems are no more regional issues and, thus, environmental specimen banking should not be limited to national boundaries, but should have a global outlook. A longitudinal study on the effects of team building for university baseball team in Japan: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect in the experience of TB among university baseball team from the view point of team-vitalization.
We carry out one university baseball team males, 6 female. The average age of the participants was Then, using Check List of Team- Vitalization that was developed by consulting firm in Japan , we examined the degrees of team-vitalization. The answers of this investigation were collected from the participants at fifth times before intervention of TB, immediately after TB, after three months of TB, before intervention of follow-up training of TB, and immediately after follow-up training of TB.
This study for eight months provided the following three conclusions; 1 University baseball team was vitalized through the experience of TB. The prevalence of probable delayed-sleep-phase syndrome in students from junior high school to university in Tottori, Japan. Delayed sleep phase syndrome DSPS is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder with a typical onset in the second decade of life.
DSPS is characterized by the sleep-onset insomnia and the difficulty in waking at the desired time in the morning. Although DSPS is associated with inability to attend school, the prevalence has been controversial. To elucidate a change in the prevalence of DSPS among young population, epidemiological survey was conducted on Japanese students.
A total of 4, students of junior high school, senior high school, and university were enrolled in this cross sectional study in Tottori Prefecture. They answered anonymous screening questionnaire regarding school schedule, sleep hygiene and symptomatic items of sleep disorders. The prevalence of probable DSPS was estimated at 0. In university , the prevalence of the last year students showed the highest value 1. The prevalence increased with advancing university school years.
Senior students of university are more vulnerable to the disorder than younger students. Appropriate school schedule may decrease the mismatch between the individual's sleep-wake cycle and the school schedule. Promotion of a regular sleep habit is necessary to prevent DSPS among this population. This study aimed to examine the effect of the first-year class in Japanese universities on developing students' self-efficacy. An analysis of the class design based on the theory of self-efficacy implies that such courses are primarily intended to develop students' self-efficacy by putting them through enactive mastery experiences.
Cross-sectional research using a questionnaire that included food-safety knowledge, perceptions, risk-reduction behavior, stages for the selection of safer food based on the Transtheoretical Model, and…. Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Their potential health risks and sources at three non-urban sites in Japan. This investigation was undertaken to monitor particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs concentrations in order to determine their emission sources and potential human health risks in remote and rural areas of Japan. Significant seasonal variation in concentrations occurred at Hiki and Higashi- Hiroshima , while no significant variation occurred at Kamihaya.
Ambient air temperature greatly affected PAH concentrations in Higashi- Hiroshima , but had only moderate effects in Kamihaya and Hiki. Wind direction also influenced the concentrations of PAHs. Vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, biomass combustion, and domestic heating and cooking were identified as the main PAH emission sources using principal component analysis. Backward trajectory calculations showed that domestically generated PAHs were significant in Kamihaya and Hiki, while in Higashi- Hiroshima concentrations were mainly influenced by long-range transport.
The incremental lifetime lung cancer risk had values of 3. Clearly, stricter guidelines for PAHs need to be implemented at these sites to protect the population. Factors promoting sense of coherence among university students in urban areas of Japan: Sense of coherence SOC is a concept that helps to explain the relation between personal intentionality as psychosocial factors and health-related behaviors.
Thus, it is essential to enhance SOC when encouraging a healthy lifestyle. However, the factors that promote SOC have not been fully investigated among university students. The objective of this study was to clarify the general resistance resources GRRs that may promote the development of the SOC among university students. Therefore, we examined the relationship between SOC and social capital SC , self-efficacy, and mental health. Participants included students from nine academic departments at eight universities in the Kanto or Kinki metropolitan areas of Japan.
Participants completed an anonymous questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis using structural equation modeling was conducted to verify the factor structure of the SOC scale. Stepwise multiple regression analysis and two-way layout analysis of variance were performed with SOC as the dependent variable. The factor structure of SOC indicated the optimal model fit in the second-order three-factor model of the 12 items. SOC was predicted by five variables: For students from urban areas, SOC was predicted by the interaction between cognitive and structural SC.
SOC was significantly related to cognitive SC, structural SC, and self-efficacy as well as mental health in university students from urban areas. Furthermore, the combination of higher-level cognitive SC and higher-level structural SC exerted an inhibitory influence on SOC among students who previously and currently live in urban areas. Lessons for Low- and Middle-Income Countries. When the Japanese government adopted Western medicine in the late nineteenth century, it left intact the infrastructure of primary care by giving licenses to the existing practitioners and by initially setting the hurdle for entry into medical school low.
Public financing of hospitals was kept minimal so that almost all of their revenue came from patient charges. When social health insurance SHI was introduced in , benefits were focused on primary care services delivered by physicians in clinics, and not on hospital services. This was reflected in the development and subsequent revisions of the fee schedule. The policy decisions which have helped to retain primary care services might provide lessons for achieving universal health coverage in low- and middle-income countries LMICs.
Merits and demerits of engaging in athletic, academic and part-time job roles among university student-athletes in Japan. Although role conflict management is necessary for the prevention of dropout from participation in sports, little has been known about it, especially regarding Japanese university student-athletes.
Hence, this study examined the aspects of merit and demerit involved in their performances of academic, athletic, part-time job, family and human relationship roles. The merits and demerits were evaluated using the theoretical concepts of negative spillover NSP , positive spillover PSP , compensation and segmentation.
In the research, a total of participants 63 males, 45 females described information about their multiple roles in the Multiple Roles Map MRM form.
Sharing these findings will be effective in helping to solve role conflict problems of university student-athletes in Japan. Studies have been completed on the activation of sulfur by fast neutrons from the Little Boy-Comet Critical Assembly which replicates the general features of the Hiroshima bomb.

The complex effects of the bomb's design and construction on leakage of sulfur-activation neutrons were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Our sulfur activation studies were performed as part of a larger program to provide benchmark data for testing of methods used in recent source-term calculations for the Hiroshima bomb. The Changing Academic Profession in Asia: Contexts, Realities and Trends. The first conference of this new project was held in Hiroshima in February It is obvious that pharmacists play a critical role as risk managers in the healthcare system, especially in medication treatment.
Hitherto, there is not a single multicenter-survey report describing the effectiveness of clinical pharmacists in preventing medical errors from occurring in the wards in Japan. Thus, we conducted a 1-month survey to elucidate the relationship between the number of errors and working hours of pharmacists in the ward, and verified whether the assignment of clinical pharmacists to the ward would prevent medical errors between October , Questionnaire items for the pharmacists at 42 national university hospitals and a medical institute included the total and the respective numbers of medication-related errors, beds and working hours of pharmacist in 2 internal medicine and 2 surgical departments in each hospital.
Regardless of severity, errors were consecutively reported to the Medical Security and Safety Management Section in each hospital. The analysis of errors revealed that longer working hours of pharmacists in the ward resulted in less medication-related errors; this was especially significant in the internal medicine ward where a variety of drugs were used compared with the surgical ward. The results of this survey strongly indicate that assignment of clinical pharmacists to the ward is critically essential in promoting medication safety and efficacy.
At high energies, the neutron spectra were also measured by means of the TOF method using NE organic liquid scintillators. For the purpose of understanding the current conditions of the duties of industrial physicians and the consciousness of graduates of the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan UOEH engaged in industry, we performed a questionnaire survey in July, and July, and reported the results J UOEH A similar survey was carried out in July, We dispatched the questionnaire to industrial physicians and physicians in occupational health organizations who had graduated from UOEH and got the replies.
The investigation asked about their career, their activities, and how they thought about their duties. We compared the three years and got the following results: The investigation performed every seven years since July, showed that the ratio of the graduates of UOEH whose official post and rank would not be promoted in the future had gradually increased, while the ratio of graduates who were satisfied with the relationship with the superior and the industrial health staff had also gradually increased. The overall monthly isolation rates of MRSA decreased from a mean of In addition, ABK use significantly decreased from Protein variants in Hiroshima and Nagasaki: The results of 1,, allele product determinations based on blood samples from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, involving 30 different proteins representing 32 different gene products, are analyzed in a variety of ways, with the following conclusions: Our analysis reveals that statistical procedures designed to reduce the sample to equivalent independent genomes do not in population comparisons compensate for the familial cluster effect of rare variants.
Accordingly, the data set was reduced to one representative of each sibship , allele products. Industrial lasers in Japan. I am to report on some aspects of industrial lasers in Japan. Mostly centering on the market. In Japan , the history of laser developnent is rather profound. Ever since the first invention of the laser in this country in This is partly because of the fact that in Japan the spectroscopic studies of the ruby was very popular in the late 's. Ever since niost of the work has been done in the research laboratories of the industry, not in the universities or not in the governmental laboratories.
And since that time our first activity was mainly centering on the basic research, but after that time we have the evolution of the technology. One of the features in Japan is that the activity of developement and research of laser technology from the very basic phase up to the present commercialization has been done by the same group of people, including ine. We had a national project which ended about six years ago which was sponsored by MITI. And because of this national project, the effect of this project had a very enlightening effect in Japan.
And after that our Japanese laser market became very flourishing. A Symbol of Peace and Peace Education: The Genbaku Dome in Hiroshima. This great international seaport facility covers almost all of the bayfront and is home to over thirty million people.
However, you need to contact the temple in advance. The outer appearance of the castle is pretty cool in my opinion. On six floors you can find a tea room, a library, an observation deck and also a huge museum displaying artefacts from up to years ago. However, the temple complex is really impressive and the surrounding landscape is stunning. You can see Katsuyama Castle in the background as well.
Another famous one is Saihoji Temple in Kyoto. Not only is the ground around the temple covered in moss, there are also lots of massive, old cedar trees. This is creating a magic atmosphere. Near the temple a hiking trail leads up to sacred Mt. Maruoka Castle is yet another of the only 12 original castle keeps in Japan. Maruoka Castle is only about 12 km away from Fukui City. The castle was built in the late 16th century which makes it one of the oldest surviving castle in Japan.
Tsuruga City faces the Sea of Japan and offers beautiful landscape views. Famous poet Matsuo Basho , visited this shrine in You can find his poems caved in stone there as well as a statue of him. In , when the shrine was founded, a sacred spring was there. The pure water is said to provide longevity and health. The color combination of blue ocean, white sand beach and green pine trees is a designated Site of Scenic Beauty. Gifu Prefecture has so much to offer and I really love this prefecture.
However, most places are too far away from Kyoto to really make sense as a day trip which is why I only picked one option for now. The main attraction is probably Gifu Castle which is located on Mt. Kinka m from where you have a lovely view of Gifu City and the Nagara River. It was reconstructed in , so the castle keep is relatively new. From Gifu Park you can take the ropeway up to the castle, but before you do that, you might want to check out the sights within the park.
The Nawa Insect Museum has a really impressive collection of insects. Gifu City houses a few temples and shrines that you might want to check out on your way, e. Gifu is also famous for cormorant fishing ukai in the Nagara River in summer. Excursion boats can be hired from mid-May to mid-October and will set out after it got dark. If you want to enjoy stunning nature and soak in onsen, then the area around Ena Gorge is something you should consider. Just like with Gifu Prefecture, most sights within Nagano Prefecture are too far away from Kyoto to justify a day trip.
One exception might be Matsumoto Castle. Note that this might become expensive unless you have some kind of train pass. Matsumoto Castle is without a doubt one of the most impressive Japanese castles and well worth a visit. The original wooden interiors and external stonework of the main keep remain. The post towns of interest are Magome , Tsumago and Narai. The hike from Magome Gifu Prefecture to Tsumago Nagano Prefecture along the well maintained section of the former Nakasendo is very popular. Tsumago is the best preserved town, but many people say that Narai has the most authentic Edo period atmosphere.
Another very popular itinerary for the Chubu region includes Takayama — Shirakawa-go — Kanazawa. Kanazawa City is the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture and has quite a few interesting sightseeing spots. Right next to the garden is Kanazawa Castle which was in use from to Of course, there are also many temples and shrines. The most interesting being Myoryuji Temple also known as Ninjadera. The temple earned its name because of its many deceptive defences. Oyama Shrine is also worth a visit because of its unusual shrine gate that was designed by a Dutch architect.
Chaya means teahouse and refers to a special type of restaurant where customers are entertained by geisha. The Higashi Chaya District is the largest and thus most interesting one. Nagamachi is a former samurai district where you still can enter some old samurai residences. Natadera Temple and Awazu Onsen have been on my bucket list for a while, but not with top priority.
However, I highly encourage you to recommend your favorite encounters near Kyoto and share them with us in the comments below. I certainly know a lot more about Japan than I do about my own home country. The coastline along the Sea of Japan is truly beautiful. More people should go and check it out. Many thanks for this comprehensive list, Jasmine! Regarding the travel times mentioned, I take it they are based on the fastest trains available e. Some of the destinations mentioned are quite far away I felt, it is really amazing how quickly the Shinkansen makes various places available Flicking through the headlines at first, I almost thought you had omitted mount Hiei, but I then found it mentioned in the Otsu item.
But the mountain is only half Shiga, the other side belongs to Kyoto prefecture. The temple on the Hiei-zan is the Tendai buddhism headquarter even today and played an important role in Japanese history. Before Nobunaga attacked the temple to eliminate the warrior monks fighting him, it must have been a sort of fortress, hard to imagine now. I went there in autumn and the combination of the colourful leaves with the many temple buildings in different states of splendour and the surrounding mountain nature was fantastic.
Actually, coming from Kyoto, a scheduled bus ascends Hiei-zan, and the whole temple complex together with the surrounding mountain easily allows spending all day there, so I would recommend making it a separate day trip all by itself. You are very welcome, Karl. For destinations that are closer, I mentioned both travel times e. Thank you for sharing all the extra information. I tried to keep it as short as possible as this post is already long enough.
Glad to hear you got to go during autumn. Great info…Japan is so beautiful and rich with culture!! I was given a gift to live there for eight years and been back several times. I am bookmarking this one for future trip planning. I loved climbing the narrow streets up to the temple, and the views are just stunning.
