Shallow Grave (A Bill Slider Mystery Book 7)
The murder of any journalist is bound to whip the media into a frenzy. So when ex-BBC correspondent Ed Stonax is found dead, the last thing Detective Inspector Bill Slider needs to complicate his life is the reappearance of an old enemy issuing death threats. Along with that and a high-profile murder to solve, he must try to find a spare moment to marry Joanna before their baby is born. What was this good girl from a strict Christian family doing out there, dressed to kill, when she was supposed to be at a sleepover with school friends?
A secret boyfriend from a run-down estate and a recently-released rapist look tasty; or could the nearby fairground or the eponymous prison have something to do with it?

David Rogers was a doctor, handsome, charming and rich. He lived the lifestyle of the consultant - expensive clothes, top restaurants, exclusive clubs - until someone killed him in the hallway of his lovely million-plus-pound house. Was he killed for passion, professional jealousy, or plain old money? When Melanie Hunter goes missing it is completely out of character for the polite, friendly palaeontologist, and the men in her life come under suspicion. Bill Slider and his team investigate, and if they are to succeed then they will need to find the answer to two questions: And who loved her too much?
A scorching August day, and a handsome young man is found dead in his bath. And his wallet and keys are missing. Either this was suicide with concealment in mind - or murder. The late Mr Lionel Bygood, who looks, to all intents and purposes, like an old-fashioned sort of gentleman, has been bashed in the head with a bronze statue, in what Doc Cameron describes as 'our old friend the Frenzied Attack'.
It soon emerges that Mr Bygood was a philanthropist, well-known locally for giving help and advice to all who needed it, from all walks of life. Antiques expert Rowland Egerton, the darling of daytime TV, has been stabbed to death in his luxurious West London home. The press are going to be all over this one like a nasty rash: Egerton's partner, the bulky, granite-faced John Lavender, found the body; did he also do the deed?
Or was it a burglary gone wrong? A missing Faberge box and Impressionist painting point that way. But as Slider and his team investigate, none of the facts seem to fit.
A middle-aged man jumps under a tube train at Shepherd's Bush station, and a teenage girl is killed in a hit-and-run in a country lane puzzlingly far from her home on the White City Estate: At least it's a change of speed after the grind of domestics, burglaries and Community Liaison. But links to a cold case - another dead teenager, pulled out of the River Thames - create doubts as to whether they are indeed unrelated. One of my favourite authors.

She is a very good writer. As always, I was kept guessing until close to the end. Really love getting to know the characters, makes me feel as though I would like to meet them. A builder is doing some work on shoring up a terrace at the Old Rectory. One morning he comes face to face with the body of his dead wife at the bottom of a hole he had dug the previous day.
While all the books in this series can be read as standalone stories I think they are best read in the order in which they were written. This is number seven in the series. If you like crime novels which are well written with interesting characters and plenty of humour then try Bill Slider. A body is found in a hole dug at the back of an old Rectory in a highly respectable London Neighbourhood and Detective Bill Slider of the Shepherd's Bush Police Station is called in to investigate.
In fact the case at first sight seems astonishingly simple. Jennifer Andrews, the deceased, has been placed in a hole dug by her husband, a builder, to shore up an old terrace.
Shallow Grave (Bill Slider, book 7) by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles
Had Frances Hammond not been out walking her dog in her backyard, no one might have seen the body before Andrews had a chance to fill in the hole and bury his wife for ever. After all, he had been following her around all night - even threatening to kill her. However there are things that just don't add up - why was Jennifer's handbag left in his car? Jennifer Andrews was no saint either - she had been having affairs, and who had she gone to meet the night before?
And what does the real-estate agent Donald Meacher have to do with this all? I do like Harrod-Eagles mysteries but her characters of Bill Slider, his lover Joanna, Ex-wife Irene and his side-kick, Atherton just seem a bit cardboard to me. They don't seem to have real emotions - just reactions handy to creating a bit of personal angst. I found that side a real let down. This is Harrod Eagles 7th book in the Bill Slider series there are 8 of them so far to April and I'm not sure how many more there are to come.
She does write a great and enjoyable mystery. The personal life doesn't intrude too much into the real story of the mystery. One person found this helpful. See all 5 reviews.
