Never has she had a more grateful audience, hungry for these new ideas. She has created a real paradigm shift in a very difficult place. Her life's work is now impacting lives and families in a completely new way that can eventually impact our communities when these women are released. She is teaching leadership through values, self-awareness, and authenticity. What could be more powerful? I urge you to read this book, embrace it, live it, and share it. This book displays the principles she helped create and build for ATHENA, but the book was more of a reflection on her life than what I was expecting. Her stories are motivating and inspiring, but when I got about halfway through the book, I found some of the examples earlier in the book were brought up again. I felt that the book could have been a little shorter and more to the point than it is. As a personal and business coach, I am always seeking simple yet profound road maps that can inspire and guide my clients to step into the fullness and power of who they are most authentically.
Becoming ATHENA is as good as it gets when it comes to understanding and putting into practice the qualities of leadership that make the difference between ordinary and extraordinary results.

Martha Mertz knows more about Women and Leadership than many people will know in a lifetime. Interesting stories and observations along with practical "how-to" advice. I think this book is a great read. It's also a wonderful gift for that emerging women leader in your life when she needs an added boost.
I read her book in order to write an article on it - and enjoyed it as much as a good biography or story collection! Mertz included well-told family experiences circa ss that set the stage for ATHENA, including her talented Aunt Erva who mysteriously disappeared from the family in order to establish a new, successful independent life; the oh-so-familiar struggles of women in the male-dominated business world; and finally, truly inspiring stories of people who model ATHENA's eight tenets of enlightened leadership.
Even as the gender balance gradually rights itself in our world, ATHENA-style leadership will remain vibrantly applicable. Becoming Athena brought back so many memories of my experiences with leadership in a small city in Upstate NY. Martha includes some stories from some very down to earth, real women who have experienced the difficulties of leading in a society that uses a "business dialect" that most women are unfamiliar with.
Learning the dialect of a male dominated business community is critical to any woman achieving a seat on a board of directors, or a leadership position in a community organization. I am a professor at a community college in MD; and, a quote from the book struck me about how things are changing in the business world since This was a tremendous waste of valuable human resources that the U.
Women bring a different skill to the leadership situation- intuition - which is not always a trusted or valued trait. The book refers to this occasional internal voice that we hear that suggests some action as the "mad woman in the attic". Having the courage to notice and listen to that intuition is the result of having the courage to be our authentic selves This is a great book for anyone to read who appreciates good leadership- it should be required reading for all young people who have visions of being a leader!
