Notes From the Underground is a darkly fascinating short novel depicts the struggles of a doubting, supremely alienated protagonist in a world of relative values. Seminal work introduced moral, religious, political and social themes that dominated Dostoyevsky s later masterworks. Constance Garnett s authoritative translation is reprinted here, with a new introduction. We will send you an SMS containing a verification code.

This is where the third part begins when the narrator ends up sleeping with Liza, a young prostitute. After the deed, the narrator rambles on about how she should get out while the getting is good, engaging in moralistic diatribe. Before leaving, he gives her his address card.

His feelings for Liza bounce between whipping post and object of affection. And, being a classic unreliable narrator, the reader is left to guess as to the weight of those competing feelings.

Once one gets into the second part, this book becomes intriguing. The lead character would, at best, be classified and anti-hero.

Even most Philosophy majors will find it needlessly cynical — if interesting. Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. The book contains a collection of Dostoyevsky's works, in a chronological order and tries to show his gradual development as an author.

The Foreword and the Afterword are equally praise-worthy. They give an illuminating account of Dostoyevsky, his life and works. The only complaint I have is that the quality of pages is very poor. The print size is good, though. I'd suggest buying this edition for the Afterword and Foreword themselves, also the cover-art.

Masterpiece in its own right, what an understanding of human emotion and what an extraordinary way of expressing them. Though this book was written centuries back but each and every line is very much alive. This deserve nothing less then five star. This has motivated me to read "Crime and Punishments" and "The Idiot". You will be amazed with the depth these thoughts can penetrate.

  5. I am going to buy a hardcover copy of this book. This is the 3rd book of the Russian author that I've read and now, he has easily become one of my favorite authors! This was such a passionate tale of an individual who's sick of the society and its laws, and often at the expense of being self-contradictory, this paradoxical narrator goes on to explain the importance of suffering in life.

The first part might feel like a rant of someone depressed, but bear with it and you will be rewarded, although I should warn you - this is not something you pick up if you want to read an uplifting book. One of the most depressing, but strangely beautiful books I've ever read. Well , this book is loathsome and loving at the same time. Fyodor Dostoevsky has written in such a manner that he makes the reader hate the Underground Man. He is spiteful, hating, lonely but few moments like the ones where the Underground Man who never ever had the feeling of family briefly describes what it's like to have a family.

That is pure talent of the writer. I can't say this book will change your life but it will change your perception about life. Dostoyevsky holds a mirror to every reader of this book. We can come overground by diving deep into the authors underground truths. The back cover had smudges all over which ruined the experience of buying a great book.
